How to Properly Dose CBD for Dogs

dog looking at a medication bottleYou can use CBD both as a regular supplement to boost your dog’s health or to relieve specific symptoms and ailments.

Just like with any other supplement, it’s really important you find the right dose of CBD for your pet.

Now, scour the web for CBD dosing information, and you’ll find some rough guidelines on how much CBD you should give your dog, cat, or other pet.

I’ve covered this information in great detail on my CBD dosage page.

So the information below should serve as a rough guideline. Please see the link above if you want more details about dosage.

Cannabinoids like CBD can affect different individuals in very unique ways and you’ll need to take the time to find the dose that works best for your pet.

Some dogs might only need a few drops of CBD every day, while others might need multiple doses spread throughout the course of a day in order to get the right kind of relief.

To find that sweet spot with your pet, consider introducing them to CBD very gradually using small doses.

Most pet CBD companies will recommend giving your dog between 0.25-0.5mg of CBD for every pound of bodyweight.

This is pretty standard, but you can start with even smaller doses.

Sometimes just a few drops of CBD can work wonders for pets.

The way you use CBD with your pet should be super personalized because there really is no one-size-fits-all approach to using this supplement.

Nonetheless, below I’ll cover some basic guidelines to help you pick the right strength oil for your pet.

Choosing the Right Strength CBD Oil for Your Pet

The strength of the oil you choose depends a lot on the size of your pet, their needs, and the way they metabolize and process CBD.

The oils I review on my homepage come in varying concentrations.

  • King Kanine, for example, produces the oils with the lowest concentrations of CBD, ranging from 75mg per 30ml to 300mg per 30ml.
  • HolistaPet, on the other hand, has mid-strength oils available in 150mg per 15ml, 300mg per 15ml, and 600mg per 30ml (these last 2 oils are the same strength, the latter just comes in a larger bottle).
  • HempMyPet has one mid-strength oil containing 250mg per 30ml, and one very concentrated oil containing 1000mg per 30ml.

Now, each brand has their own recommendations on how to dose their oils and I suggest you always follow the instructions that came with the product you’re using.

If you look at the 3 oils listed above, you can clearly see that 1 drop from each brand is not the exact same thing. So your dosage will always depend on the concentration you’re using. It’s always safe to follow the recommendations from the brand, and this is why I only recommend reputable pet CBD companies.

Also, consider this:

If your dog has never tried CBD before, you can start them off on microdoses and gradually increase their dose until you find that sweet spot that best suits them.

Now, this is not necessary, but many pet owners see results with it. Simply take 1 or 2 weeks and gradually work up to the recommended dose given by the manufacturer.

This gives their body time to adjust to this new supplement and also allows you to really personalize their dose to give them the best benefit.

Also, certain dogs might actually need a bit more than the recommended dose, so it’s important to monitor your pet as you’re administering CBD over the first month or so.

But how do you choose one oil over another?

I know this can be confusing.

So let me answer this very clearly for you:

Here’s the bottom line:

When it comes to choosing a “concentration”, it technically does not matter, however it is much easier to dose CBD properly, if you have an oil that is ideal for your pet’s size.

Every concentration you order, whether it’s a 150mg bottle, or a 1000mg bottle, will come with dosage recommendations for your pet. These will usually be based on their weight.

From these recommendations, you can start slowly and build up to the dosage over a few weeks, and monitor how your pet is reacting. Some times you might need to give more than the recommended dose.

If you purchase an oil from any brand I recommend, they will give you a dosage recommendation based on your pet’s weight.

Most oils are sold in 30ml bottles which have 75mg , 150mg and 300mg of “CBD”. The dosage charts given by the brands will always tell you approximately how much to give based on your pet’s bodyweight and perhaps their ailment.

Technically, one could use a 75mg bottle and a 150mg bottle to get the exactly same results, they’ll just use more “drops” with the 75mg bottle.

So the end results can really be achieved by all the variations of concentrations, because of the dosage charts.

But it just makes more sense for larger dogs to get higher concentrations because otherwise they will use more product, and if you really calculated it, you do save money going with a higher concentration in most cases.

On the other spectrum, if you’ve got a smaller pet, the low concentration oils work better because they are easier to dose. A small dog or a cat only needs a small dose of a low concentrated oil. If you had a high concentrated oil, you might find it hard to administer the oil properly, as 1 drop may be too much in some cases.

So the recommendations below are ideal.

Here are Some Specific Recommendations for You

  • For pets under 20 lbs, you may want to try HolistaPet’s 150mg CBD Oil.
  • For pets over 20 lbs, consider HolistaPet’s 300mg CBD Oil.

holistapet cbd pet tinctureFollow the dosage instructions on the back of the packaging, and consider splitting your dog’s dose into 2 servings (1 in the morning and one before bed).

Their dosage instructions recommend doses of between 0.25-0.5mg per lb of bodyweight, which is simple to follow from their dosage chart.

You can administer the oil by simply dropping it onto a biscuit or treat or gently squeezing it directly from the dropper into your pet’s mouth.

Stick to your starting dose for at least 2 weeks to give your pet time to adjust to the supplement.

This will also decrease the chances of your dog having any side effects from the oil, although this is very rare.

If you feel that your pet could use a bigger dose, you can then start to step things up after the first 2 weeks.

To do so, either increase their dosage size, or consider investing in a stronger oil.

You’ll still want to stick to the dosage instructions that come with the product, but these higher concentrations just mean the oil will last longer, seeing as you’ll need fewer drops of oil per dose.

Again, keep an eye on your pet, gauge their reaction over the first couple of weeks, and increase their dosage steadily until you find that sweet spot.

Here’s a Quick Buying Guide Recap:

  • For small dogs under 20 lbs, order HolistaPet’s 150mg concentration.
  • Ford dogs over 20 lbs, order HolistaPet’s 300mg concentration.
  • For large dogs over 60 lbs, order HolistaPet’s 600mg concentration, or HemMy Pet’s 1000mg concentration

A Note On CBD Side Effects

CBD is a very safe and well-tolerated supplement.

In fact, it is completely non-toxic and no one has ever died from taking large amounts of CBD.

CBD also very rarely causes side effects, and even when it does these tend to be really mild.

The only side effects I’ve heard about from other pet owner’s are lethargy and diarrhea.

Luckily, you can avoid these side effects by starting your pet off on small doses and giving their body time to adjust to the supplement.

If and when you feel it’s time to step up your pet’s dose, do so gradually like you would with any other supplement or medication.

Remember, the information I’m sharing here is purely informational and should help guide you on purchasing the right oil for your pet.

Do not take any of this as veterinary advice, and always consult your vet before starting your pet off on a new supplement like CBD.
