The Benefits of Edible CBD Pet Treats

If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’re well aware of the large variety of CBD pet products out there.

I review a lot of these products, including oils, capsules, and topicals, on my website.

But before I do, you might be wondering what sets these products apart from other CBD products like oils and capsules.

CBD edibles like infused-coconut oil, peanut butter, or treats deliver a set amount of cannabinoids to your dog’s body in a very unique way.

CBD oil, for example, can be administered directly under your dog’s tongue where it’ll be absorbed by the mucous membranes there.

CBD edibles, on the other hand, have to pass through your dog’s digestive system in order to enter the body and take effect.

That’s because the endocannabinoid system (the system of receptors and molecular pathways that process cannabinoids like CBD) is present all throughout the GI tract.

Now, there’s obviously a downside to this:

CBD absorbed via the GI tract and digestive system can take up to an hour to take effect (or longer, depending on your pet’s metabolism and whether they have anything in their stomach).

CBD absorbed via the mucous membranes under the tongue, on the other hand, can start to take effect in as little as 15-30mins.

CBD treats like infused coconut oil are also super easy to dose.

Oils, on the other hand, can be a little tricky to dose, especially if you’ve never used CBD before.

Finally, one of the main benefits of treats like these is that they are great for dogs that don’t like taking medications or supplements.

As I’m sure you know, CBD is naturally derived from cannabis.

The products I review on my website are made from hemp, a special variety of cannabis which contains high concentrations of CBD and only trace amounts of THC (the psychoactive component of marijuana).

Here’s what I’m getting at:

Hemp extract has a naturally bitter taste that most dogs don’t like.

CBD oils tend to preserve some of this flavor, meaning your dog might resist taking CBD in this form.

CBD capsules are a bit better at hiding this taste, but they might not work for dogs who are picky about taking pill-shaped supplements and might spit them out.

That’s where CBD-infused treats really set themselves apart.

These products are also made with hemp extract but are prepared with a lot of other ingredients that help mask its flavor.

They make administering CBD super easy for you, and enjoyable for your pet.

Coconut Oil + CBD: A Super Versatile Pet Supplement

The most common CBD-infused edibles for dogs come in the form of doggie biscuits.

However, I recently found out about this new product from HempMy Pet.

I really like this supplement because it offers pet owners a really versatile alternative to regular dog treats and biscuits.

You can either give the oil to your pet by itself, mix it into their food, or even use it to cook if you self-prepare your pet’s meals.

Plus, combining the health benefits of both coconut oil and CBD, this is a really comprehensive treat that can work wonders for your pet’s health.

The Health Benefits of Coconut Oil for Dogs

Chances are you already know about some of the health benefits of coconut oil.

Maybe you already use it to condition your pet’s coat, disinfect cuts and scratches, or in your cooking.

But what gives coconut oil its many health benefits?

Well, coconut oil is really rich in medium-chain fatty acids, often referred to as MCFAs.

In fact, almost half of the fat in coconut oil is lauric acid, a special type of MCFA that has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, promotes weight loss, and much more.

Unlike other saturated fats, lauric acid is sent directly to the liver where it is broken down immediately and used as energy rather than stored as fat.

When your body breaks down lauric acid, it converts it into monolaurin which is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial.

Coconut oil is also naturally rich in capric acid, a saturated fatty acid which also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Thanks to its high concentration of these healthy fats, coconut oil can help boost your dog’s health in a number of ways.

For example, coconut oil has been shown to be particularly effective at improving digestive health by helping the body absorb more nutrients, vitamins, and minerals from food.

Coconut oil also has anti-microbial properties, which can help protect your pet against fungi, bacteria, or and even parasites.

Many pet owners, myself included, also use coconut oil to condition their pet’s coat, and it can also be used topically to protect against infections and inflammation.

For example, I have used coconut oil to condition my dogs’ coat and keep them smelling fresh, as well as spot-treat cuts, scratches, or insect bites.

In fact, thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil can even help reduce the dryness and itching caused by allergies or even dermatitis.

Finally, because coconut oil is immediately broken down and used as energy, it can also be effective at promoting weight loss.

While my pets are all at a healthy weight, I know that many pet owners use coconut oil to help their overweight pets slim down.

If you have an overweight dog, coconut oil may also help keep their cholesterol levels in check, fight symptoms of metabolic syndrome, and even boost their metabolism and encourage your pet’s body to burn more energy.

The Health Benefits of CBD

CBD has taken the health industry by storm.

And just like we humans can benefit from CBD, so can our furry friends.

That’s because dogs have an endocannabinoid system just like humans do.

CBD can help activate this system, which has been shown to mediate a wide variety of bodily processes, including:

  • Memory
  • Body temperature
  • Mood
  • Emotion
  • Stress response
  • Appetite
  • Metabolism
  • Motor function
  • Brain activity
  • Inflammation
  • Pain
  • Cell growth/death
  • Immune health

… and much more.

In fact, thanks to the wide reach of the endocannabinoid system, CBD supplements can help dogs dealing with anxiety, appetite problems, chronic inflammation and pain, seizures, and more.

But how exactly does CBD help alleviate so many of these conditions?

Well, the endocannabinoid system is made up of 2 main receptors; CB1 and CB2, which are present all throughout the brain and body.

These receptors are designed to respond to the endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG, which the body produces naturally on an as-needed basis.

The cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant are very similar to these endogenous cannabinoids and can sometimes bind to these same receptors.

THC, for example, is structurally very similar to anandamide and can bind directly to CB1 receptors.

When it does, THC has the ability to alter the way neurons in the brain, leading to the plethora of symptoms we associate with being “high.”

CBD, however, doesn’t fit into either CB1 nor CB2 receptors.

Instead, it activates other receptors in the body which stimulate the endocannabinoid system in more indirect ways.

In fact, studies suggest that CBD can activate over 60 different molecular pathways at once, which could contribute to the reason why it can have so many different effects and help with so many different ailments and symptoms.

I’ve written a lot about the benefits of CBD for pets in the past.

How to Use CBD-Infused Products:

One of the reasons I like this product is because it is super versatile.

Unlike with regular dog treats and biscuits, there are many different ways to give your dogs this unique product.

1 teaspoon of coconut oil contains roughly 3-4mg of CBD, and the product comes with simple dosage instructions to help you give your dog the right dose based on their size and the intensity of their symptoms.

Thanks to the neutral smell and flavor of coconut oil, you can mix the oil directly into your pet’s food without any problem.

Alternatively, if you cook your pet’s meals, you can also use this oil to replace your regular cooking oil.

Finally, you can also just give the oil to your dog with a spoon.

Thanks to its delicious flavor, many dogs will enjoy licking the oil from a spoon just like they would peanut butter or cream cheese.

Other Treats Which Have Coconut Oil and CBD

organic dog biscuits from hempmy petThe brand that I’m talking about here (HempMyPet), also manufactures a great line of CBD dog biscuits made with the coconut oil I just mentioned.

If your dog likes biscuit treats and you’re looking for a product that’s super easy to dose, make sure to give these delicious treats a try.

Available in a small and large dog formula, these pumpkin-flavored biscuits are handmade in small batches with top-shelf ingredients such as garbanzo bean and rice flour, tapioca starch, and fresh fruit and veggies.

Plus, each biscuit contains a calculated amount of CBD (2mg or 5mg), ideal for both small and large dogs.

All of their products are made with organic ingredients and organically-grown hemp from Colorado, USA.
