Ice cream flavors with names like Half-Baked and Phish Food should’ve been enough to realize Ben & Jerry’s is a fan of cannabis. Just in case you hadn’t made the connection yet, the hippie ice cream company wants to make it crystal clear with its latest announcement: Ben & Jerry’s really wants to make CBD ice cream and wants your help to do it.
The problem is infusing CBD into food and beverages is currently prohibited by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although the FDA isn’t known to passionately enforce that rule, the federal administration will have a public hearing May 31 on the issue. Ben & Jerry’s has already submitted its supportive comments, and wants consumers to join the cause.
“We’re doing this for our fans,” said Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy. “We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a fun, Ben & Jerry’s way.”
According to restaurateurs and chefs, cannabis and CBD-infused dishes will be the food trend of 2019. Ben & Jerry’s very much wants to participate in that trend. By the way, this isn’t another case of a company joining the cannabis bandwagon to turn a quick buck. On 4/20 this year, the company also called for criminal justice reform in conjunction with cannabis legalization. In fact, the company said, “Legalization without justice is half-baked.”
